Energy Tips During High Heat

Jun 28, 2026

It’s going to be a hot week, Zeeland. That means a lot of energy being used to cool homes and buildings, which can be taxing on our electric grid. Check out these easy tips to keep your home comfortable while being energy-conscious:

Set Your Thermostat Wisely

Aim for a moderate indoor temperature, ideally around 78°F.

Energy-Intensive Appliances:

Use appliances like ovens and washing machines during the early morning or late evening when overall electricity use tends to be lighter. Consider grilling those summer meals to keep your kitchen cooler as well.

Shading and Curtains:

Keep blinds and curtains closed during the hottest parts of the day to block out direct sunlight, reducing the amount of cooling needed.

Wash Cooler & Shorter:

Heating your water uses more electricity. Cool off with lukewarm to cool showers to lower energy usage, and reduce the length of your shower to use less gallons.

Water Wisely:

If you need to water your lawn, do it in the morning (before 10:00 am), to reduce the water that evaporates caused by the sun.
