Each October, public utilities across the country celebrate Public Power Week, a chance to recognize the value of locally owned, community-focused power. This year, Zeeland Board of Public Works (ZBPW) marked the occasion with a hands-on open house, a ribbon-cutting, and a coloring contest for local students.
An Open House Full of Discovery
The highlight of the week was ZBPW’s community open house, held alongside a ribbon cutting for the newly renovated Customer Service Center. Guests got a first look at the updated space and a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to keep power and water flowing in Zeeland.
Visitors could explore:
- The new History of ZBPW timeline wall. This new display traces the utility’s story and its long-standing role in the community.
- A Van de Graaff generator. This hair-raising demonstration was a favorite with kids and adults alike.
- A light pole activity. Guests got hands-on experience connecting power themselves.
- A water demonstration. It showed how much water even a small leak can waste over time.
- Community partner tables. ODC Network and OCCAA shared information about programs and resources available to local residents.
The event was a chance for neighbors to connect with the people behind their utility, and for ZBPW to say thank you to the community it serves.
Coloring Contest Winner
Local elementary students joined the celebration through a coloring contest, which drew dozens of entries. Congratulations to Taylor (pictured) from Zeeland Christian Schools, who won the grand prize goodie basket!
Thank You, Zeeland
Thank you to everyone who stopped by, to our partners at ODC Network and OCCAA, and to the ZBPW team who made the week possible. Public power is community power, and we’re proud to celebrate it with you.
